The programme

In addition to projects within the CLASSIC framework, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) supports initiatives by privately owned companies that mitigate the economic as well as the health-related impact of the corona pandemic in developing or emerging countries. To effectively counter the rapidly growing threat of COVID-19 in these countries, the focus lies on measures that are highly effective and can for the most part be implemented by the end of this year.

Following two special competitions in spring and summer 2020, over 200 suitable projects were selected for funding, of which more than 75 are already being implemented.

Suitable projects receive up to EUR 200,000 of funding, with the public contribution usually covering about 50% of the total costs. For projects that are expected to have a far above average effect, a higher amount of funding or a higher public contribution may be possible in accordance with EU law.

Target group

The programme is open for German and European companies as well as companies from developing or emerging market countries that:

  • have an annual turnover of at least EUR 400,000,
  • have records of two operational financial years and
  • are registered in the EU, a member country of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) or a country on the OECD DAC list
