Vitamins to stop people going blind

One of the world's largest chemical companies, BASF is using its know-how to fight malnutrition in developing and emerging nations as part of a strategic alliance with GIZ. Vitamin deficiency is one of the main causes of a weakened immune system, blindness and high infant and maternal mortality rates.
The alliance aims to improve the health of several million people in Asia, Africa and Latin America by giving low-income population groups affordable access to vitamin A-enriched staple foods, such as oil and flour. BASF equips local food producers with the food fortification technology they need and has linked up with traders, producers and GIZ to devise viable business models that will provide a long-term supply solution for fortified foodstuffs. Thanks to mobile laboratory equipment, partners on site can test vitamin contents and assure compliance with quality standards.
