Solar energy for Madagascar

As sellers and producers of solar plants, SolarWorld AG and Tritec International AG already have subsidiaries in various industrial and emerging nations. To supply rural
Madagascar with eco-friendly electric power, the two companies entered into a development partnership with GIZ in which they adapted existing solar systems to meet the needs of the rural population in Madagascar and equipped public buildings – such as schools and hospitals – in two municipalities with solar systems. The technology is affordable: by the time the project wraps up at the end of 2012, four villages and up to 10,000 people will be benefiting from the new power supply. To mainstream this approach in the long term, talks are held to inform local people about the advantages of sustainable energy resources.
