Organic Farming in Côte d'Ivoire
The Duisburg-based Biotropic GmbH is an association of several organic food traders whose range of goods covers a large variety of organically grown fruit and vegetables from around the globe. To secure ongoing sources of imports that meet the strict organic standards, Biotropic formed a development partnership together with sequa and the Abobo Adjamé University in Côte d'Ivoire. This has resulted in the creation of a new university department for innovative agricultural technologies and organic cultivation practices and in extension services for farmers on site to educate them about ecological cropping methods. The partners have also developed a product certification system.
Thanks to the project, farmers in the Côte d'Ivoire have been able to develop new markets and create new sources of income. Biotropic now has reliable partners who are able to produce to the required quality standards. This has enabled it to expand its product range and strengthen its trade relations with Africa.
