Asia: Mainstreaming labour law through dialogue

For a number of years now, Tchibo has not just been a purveyor of coffee, but has successfully marketed a wide range of non-food products, many of which are manufactured in Asia. Through the project, ‘Worldwide Enhancement of Social Quality', Tchibo and GIZ make sure that production complies with labour and social standards.

The idea is simple – intensive dialogue within the companies is designed to bring about fairer working conditions. To achieve this goal, a German mediation expert trained 18 local coaches in Bangladesh, China and Thailand. Working together with top and mid-management representatives as well as with the general workforce and Tchibo buyers, these coaches have devised plans to initiate changes in some 40 companies. Because the ideas are generated in the company themselves, they are accepted more readily and on a wider scale. Today a network of trainers is available to empower other companies to use this concept. Furthermore, a project website allows interested companies and organisations to access the experience and training materials collected to date. This means that the entire sector is able to profit from this unique project.
