Quality honey from Vietnam

After India and China, Viet Nam used to be the third-largest Asian exporter of honey to Germany and Europe. This was until 2007 when the EU banned imports because Vietnamese laboratories were unable to test products for residues of pesticides or antibiotics in compliance with EU standards.
Today, in a development partnership with DEG, the food trader Alfred L. Wolff is training key actors in the Vietnamese honey sector in quality management. The training concept embraces the entire value chain and addresses laboratory personnel, small farmers, bee-keepers, authorities and associations as well as experts and executives involved in processing and exports. The quality of honey from Viet Nam is to be raised to a level that will permit the resumption of exports to Europe. In this way, Alfred L. Wolff is tapping into import sources, which will enable the company to meet rising demand. In the long term, Viet Nam is to implement the quality controls on its own. Transferring this know-how will enhance food safety with respect to other food products which can then also be exported.
