The future of megacities

Today already more than half of the world's population lives in cities. Many of the large metropolitan conurbations in developing and emerging nations have grown so quickly that most of the inhabitants have to get by without water or electricity. In the Cities21 initiative, Siemens AG and GIZ use international comparisons to map out solutions for rapidly growing cities.

The municipal authorities in Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Bogotá and Jakarta have not so far had much opportunity to draw any lessons from the rapid growth of their cities and the challenges this brings with it. To give them an overview of best practices from other cities and provide practical guidance, the project partners evaluated selected megacities as part of an international comparison based on a set of fixed criteria. The comparison placed particular emphasis on sustainability and prioritised the cities' mobility services, highlighting the most successful models. Using the results, decision-makers in these Asian and Latin American metropolitan conurbations can now plan their cities' futures in a way that takes equal account of the people that inhabit them and the environment that supports them.
