In Kosovo organic waste from agriculture is often not stored properly, making it a source of groundwater contamination. To prevent this from happening in future and to make agricultural-sector waste management more ecological and sustainable, the German company Waterman GmbH and sequa formed a development partnership in 2009. At a pilot plant the company demonstrates how agricultural waste products can be processed to make compost and various substrates. The plant is operated by Agroklina, a local association of 96 agricultural enterprises. Processing generates additional sources of income for farmers who can sell these products at the local markets. At the same time, Waterman GmbH has been able to obtain an initial foothold on the Kosovar market. Experience from the project is also being channelled into proposals for future legislation. The development partnership is helping introduce European standards in organic waste processing.
