Certified shea nut products from Mali

Buyers on the global market for sheabutter expect a high quality product. However, like others, the natural cosmetics producer Börlind GmbH has experienced problems in sourcing this scarce resource in sufficiently good quality. As a result, Börlind has entered into a development partnership with sequa, with a view to launching organic and FairTrade production standards in Mali together with the cooperative ‘Jigiya Bon Soikoro', a partnership that also extends to the creation of a certification system for sheabutter production. Training courses are now being run to teach farmers how to grow, harvest, process and subsequently market the valuable nut in line with ecological standards. The newly acquired skills and corresponding certification will help secure jobs in the long term for the 300 members of the community. Furthermore, the local population is benefiting from accompanying literacy measures, hygiene training and HIV awareness raising. The development partnership has given Börlind GmbH a reliable partner that is capable of supplying the valuable natural resource in the quality required.
